Food Waste Fighter Program
Finding Inspiration in Every Turn
This program is becoming popular because young students can learn from an early stage about different ways to fight food waste in Schools and at home.
Children are the drivers of our future and a healthy environment. Our School-based Food Waste Fighter workshop (Gr 1 to 5) offers hands-on activities to make young students aware of issues tied up into one major issue - Food Waste.
Students learn about various concepts throughout the workshop including but not limited to the following:
What is Food Waste?
Where does food come from?
How does food waste negatively impact our environment?
What are the two strategies for reducing food waste at school and home?
During workshops, students are introduced to the issue of food waste (10–25 minutes). Classroom audit is conducted so students can learn to realize how much food is wasted (1 class period plus a lunch period).
Students do the following hands-on activities to extend learning about
food waste (20-40 minutes per activity):

-
A Little Food Waste Leads to a Lot - Measuring food waste using a food scale (Gr. 1-3)
-
Food is Not Trash - Bucket Sorting Game (Gr. 1-3)
-
Where Does Our Food Come From? Card Matching Game (Gr. 1-3)
-
Grown from Garbage - how to grow food from other kinds of scraps (advanced learners) (Gr. 4-5)
-
Top Chefs - Students plan and record their recipes from leftover food and share their creations with students (advanced learners) (Gr. 4-5)

Program Initiative and Learning Outcomes
The Food Waste Fighter workshop program is inspired by the notion that foods should not simply end up in landfills. To keep up with the demand for freshness, throwing away food is not a choice. Not to mention, there are still a lot of people who spend nights on the streets on empty stomachs.
Founded in 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Save-the-Bread Social Enterprise started making an impact in trying to fight food waste, fight hunger, support mental health, and save the planet.
As social entrepreneurs, we are using sustainable ways to stop food waste and fight food insecurity by collecting freshly baked/cooked food from bakeries/restaurants to feed needy people. Funds raised through our workshops are invested back into finding more sustainable ways to repurpose food (baked goods or produce) and store foods for the needy. We believe this program serves a timely purpose in educating our young students/scientists in combating food waste at Schools and at home.
